Dead GOAT's Society

Friday Jun 28, 2024

Friday Jun 28, 2024

The bus is gassed up after the fellas took last week off, and our legends pay tribute to two recently departed GOATs, sharing stories of the great Jerry West and Willie Mays.

Hall of Fame sportswriter Curry Kirkpatrick uses the occasion of the NHL finals to recall his encounter with Harvey The Hound, which led to entanglements with Triumph The Insult Comic Dog and the lead singer of a KISS cover band.

Our empassioned panel is more fired up about JJ Redick to the Lakers than the NBA Finals, and of course Coach Rich Basirico has some barbs for LeBron and Son.

Curry takes a break from Swiftie Nation to channel Adele and shares the story of his showdown of sorts with Tommy Lee Jones, and former ESPN SportsCenter anchor Bob Stevens gets in his requisite golf talk, lamenting Rory's choke at Pinehurst and the ongoing PGA Tour vs. LIV debacle.

All this and more on this week's episode of Under The Bus!

The fellas are taking a week off for load management next week while Coach B goes cruising with the grandkids, so they left it all on the floor on this week's episode of Under The Bus. Former ESPN SportsCenter anchor Bob Stevens, esteemed high school basketball coach Rich Basirico, and Hall of Fame sportswriter Curry Kirkpatrick hold court on the biggest stories in sports, weighing in on Joey Chestnut's ban from the July 4 hot dog eating contest, Dan Hurley spurning the Lakers, and Caitlin Clark's snug from the Olympic team. Curry shares some stunning stories from his years covering Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert, and a long-lost gem about the time he nearly got banned from covering the Stanley Cup Finals for treading where the NHL warned him not to tread. (Imagine that!) Bob schools his fellow grumpy GOATs on cricket and golf, while Coach B tosses frequent target Kyrie Irving under the bus, and Curry takes a shot at overzealous drone captains on golf broadcasts, plus much more.

It's a bittersweet episode of Under The Bus, now presented by Hudson’s Seafood On The Docks in Hilton Head Island, as Hall of Fame sportswriter Curry Kirkpatrick remembers his friend Bill Walton, who passed away this week after a battle with cancer. Esteemed basketball coach Rich Basirico and former ESPN SportsCenter anchor Bob Stevens reflect on their love for Walton's game, and the crew laments the passing of PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray. Curry and Coach B throw the entire Minnesota Timberwolves organization under the bus, along with the majority of the Indiana Pacers, while Curry calls Kyrie Irving "the Kanye West of basketball" and refers to Luka Doncic as a "little fatty." Bob and Curry clash on Scottie Scheffler vs. The Cop and Harrison Butker, as both exercise their freedom of speech about his graduation address at Benedictine College. If you miss this episode, you might be the next one who goes Under The Bus!

Our grumpy GOATs open this week's show by riffing on the debate over how many NBA players could make a seamless transition to the NFL (not many), bagging on Austin "Son of Doc" Rivers and getting in a shot on LeBron for posterity. Curry Kirkpatrick criticizes Scottie Scheffler's newborn son for his slow pace of play and trashes Nelly Korda (with tongue still firmly in cheek) for failing to win a sixth consecutive start. Resident Knicks fan Coach Rich Basirico shows his frustration with Thibs' short bench, while Curry shows love for Rick Carlisle and pledges allegiance to the Pacers against the "obnoxious" Nova Knicks. The guys gear up for their first season caring about the WNBA, Curry predicts the Atlanta Hawks will use their NBA Lottery win to draft another quarterback for the Falcons, and Rich predicts prison for Chiefs WR Rashee Rice. Bob Stevens points out the games he has circled on the NFL schedule, Curry reveals he has a crush on the NHL playoffs, and things wind down with an in-depth discussion of basketball coaches' wardrobes, plus a couple more gratuitous digs at LeBron.
